The Beginnings. The 19th Century

In his early twenties, coming from Germany with a great adventurous spirit, Gustav Breuer arrived in Buenos Aires. At that time, Argentina was just leaving behind years of internal political disorder; the National Constitution had been enacted in 1853, whereby ownership rights granted to inventors were recognized. In 1864 the first patent legislation was enacted, while in 1876 the first trademark bill was passed.

We do not know the exact date on which our founder started his practice, although there is evidence that as early as March 1869 he represented a client before the authorities in order to obtain a patent of invention, something that makes G. BREUER probably the oldest law firm in Argentina. A prestigious French liquor company still remains G. BREUER’s oldest client since 1881.

During the 1930’s, G. BREUER was one of the co-founders of the Argentine Association of Industrial Property Agents, and thereafter some of its partners presided over this prestigious association on different occasions. G. BREUER’s attorneys have also been many times involved in the drafting and enactment of Argentine intellectual property laws, some of which are still in force. Furthermore, and for decades, G. BREUER participated in legal actions that have constituted leading cases in that area.
